Project Overview

The Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District in California took a major step towards sustainable transportation by integrating electric school buses into its fleet. Through the EPA’s Clean School Bus (CSB) Program, the district acquired six electric school buses as part of its commitment to reducing emissions and providing a cleaner environment for students and the community.

To support this new electric fleet, the district partnered with COIL and Nuvve to install the necessary charging infrastructure. COIL designed and implemented a comprehensive charging solution, installing 14 Level 2 Nuvve chargers to ensure the buses remain fully charged and ready to serve students daily.

Project Details

  • Client: Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District

  • Location: California

  • EV Chargers Installed: 14 Level 2 Nuvve chargers

  • Electric Vehicles Supported: 6 electric school buses (acquired via the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program)

Challenges

As a public school district, Cutler-Orosi needed a scalable and reliable charging solution that could handle its growing fleet of electric buses. The charging system had to be efficient, cost-effective, and compliant with local regulations. Coordination with local utilities and proper permitting were also critical to ensuring seamless integration with the district’s infrastructure.

COIL's Solution

COIL delivered a turnkey EV charging solution, providing full support from planning through installation. Key elements of the project included:

  • Customized Installation: COIL installed 14 Level 2 chargers, strategically placed to support the district’s operational needs. This included configuring chargers for both fast and overnight charging to ensure the fleet was ready for daily routes.

  • Collaborative Effort: Working closely with Nuvve, COIL integrated the chargers with a fleet management system that allows for optimized charging schedules and energy efficiency.

  • Permitting and Compliance: COIL handled all permitting, ensuring the installation met local regulations and was fully certified for safe operation.

Results

The Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District now benefits from a fully electrified bus fleet, contributing to cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the community. The district’s investment in electric transportation, supported by COIL’s reliable charging infrastructure, sets an example for other school districts looking to transition to sustainable energy solutions.

Key Outcomes

  • Zero emissions from the electric school buses, improving air quality around schools.

  • Significant cost savings on fuel and maintenance compared to traditional diesel buses.

  • Seamless charging operations thanks to the integration of 14 Level 2 Nuvve chargers.
